PLOT AGAINST ALFONSO
STATEMENT BY ANARCHISTS. KIDNAPPERS, NOT MURDERERS. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.! LONDON, July 6. The Daily Telegraph’s Paris correspondent states that the anarchists, A’scaso and Duratti, interrogated by the magistrates, denied that they intended to kill King Alfonso. Duratti said he carnh to France to kidnap the King. He hoped to hold up the train with the help of anarchist friends, and hide the King, without doing him bodily harm, until the report of his death was widely accepted. The idea was that many officers of the Spanish army were in sympathy with anarchist ideals, but felt hound by their oaths of loyalty to the King not to take part in overthrowing the Dictatorship. Aseaso stated ho was unaware of the attempt on the King. lie was only smuggling arms over the Spanish frontier. Both admit possessing false passports, and that they received money from French and Argentine anarchists.
