UNDER DIFFICULTIES.
BRITISH NEWSPAPER STRIKE
ISSUES
Copies of the newspapers issued during the general strike at Home have reached Zealand. They are printed in single sheets, about Join, by lOin, and produced, apparently, by a photographic process. The Times of We'dnciwlay, May 5, is probably the most remarkable 'issue of that great journal on record. The front page tells briefly of the effects of the strike, the arrangements made for the distribution of food supplies and the attempts to despatch mails. On the back page is an account of proceedings in Parliament, a paragraph about the money market, and brief references to cricket results, and the announcement of a broadcasting programme. Altogether it would take only a minute or two to rend but the issue cost 2d. An emergency bulletin, apparently issued bv a private firm and sold at one penny, consists of one little sheet and is printed with red ink. It announces that a few trams are running and that other seiviees are being organised. One line is given to the nrrWt fit 'Mr. Snklatvaln, M.P. The lower half of the sheet contains stop »rf.asmows. lit reports that "general position verv satisfactory throughout countrv. No rioting -reported by police..'" Cricket results occupy three line* raein"- results two, and one line records the fact tbat Glencar was scratched for the Derby.
