The disastrous railway accident which occurred at Salt River, two miles from Capetown, resulted iu sixteen deaths, including Sir M. Senrle.

The accident was due to a coupling breaking, the three rear coaches of the express crashing iiito the stanchions of road bridge.

The scene of the disaster is an important junction of the main and suburban lines. The disaster is the worst that ever happened to a suburban train in this country, and is rarely exceeded in the death roll in the history of African railways. The wrecked train was popular,' and was usually crammed with passengers for various stations as f;,r as Simonstown, the naval port. The accident, was remarkable for the Terrible mangling of the victims, anus. legs and feet being picked up among the debris.
