THE QUEEN CITY.

POPULATION OF SUBURBS

REMARKABLE INCREASES.

(Special to (ho Herald.t AUCKLAND, this day

The census figures available for several districts in the vicinity of Auckland City arc remarkable chiefly for the evidence they afford of the wonderful growth of some of the suburban areas.

Tho greatest proportionate increase is in Mount Roskill road district, which fell short of doubling its population by the narrow margin of eighteen. The populations of Mount Albert, and Mount Eden, also have expanded with great rapidity. In the former borough the figures have risen from 1.1,345 in 1021, to 17,407 in 1926, an increase of 6152. or over 34 per cent., while in Mount Eden the increase is from 14,685 to 18,014, a gain of 3879, or a fraction more than 28 per cent.

Tf these rates of increase are maintained during the next five years the population of Mount Albert will have overtaken that of Mount Eden before the next census, and the claims of both boroughs to be recognised as cities will have to be considered after the next count has been made.

. Rapid growth has also been made in Avondale Borough, where the increase is .just over 41 per cent; in Oneliunga Borough, where it is exactly 80 per cent.; and in Mount Wellington road district, where it is almost 88 per cent.
