OBITUARY.

VETERAN OF TWO WARS. CAPTAIN S. 0. CAULTON. Aftefan illness of only two days, Captain Stapletoii Cotton Caullon died on April 14, at. his residence, 4, Yale road, St. Heller's Bay, aged 86 years, reports the Auckland Star. Mr Caulton was a true pioneer, and during his long life "played many parts." Bom at Warwickshire, England, he went to Australia when a, youth eighteen years of age, and amongst other fields was in the rush to Ballarat. He came to New Zealand about 65 years ago, and took up 3CCO acres of land at Poverty Bay, being a pioneer settler of Wajmata Valley. Mr Caullon claimed to have driven the first mob of sheep from llawke's Bay to Poverty Bay. He was also the proud owner of the first four-wheeled vehicle in that district.

Mr Caillton saw active service during the war with the Maoris, and when bO years of age, went to the Boer War in South Africa) as a lieutenant in the 7th Contingent, which took part in that bit of bard fighting, holding what was called "'New Zealand corner." At Bothasburg, Mr Caullon was so seriously Mounded that his arm had to be amputated. He then retired with the rank of captain. Mr Caillton was proprietor of the Masonic Hotel at Gisborne,' find of another hotel of the same name at Napier. When in Auckland he was proprietor of the Governor Brown Hotel in Hobson street, and was the first licensee of the Central Hotel, when H was opened. TTo later bought the hotel at St. Helier's Bay. and after retiring from that postion, carried on a coal and fire-wood business right up to his death. Mr Caitilton was blessed with goo<l health throughout his long life. He is survived by bis wife, and the following children by a previous marriage: Mr Reginald Caullon of Motu. a former Auckland Rugby representative, Mr A; S. Caillton, of Dcvonport, Mrs S. Celling of Newmarket, and Mrs W. Henderson of New Plymouth.
