MAORI MEETING HOUSE.
NEW BULBING- AT TIJ NOME The new Maori meeting house at To Ngae, near Rotorua, was .officially opened by Chief Judge R- N. dopes, Und'er,Secretary of Native Affairs, recently. The ceremony was ' performed, in the presence of a. large and representative gathering of the Arawas. The meeting liouso is named “Uenukukopako,”. after tho great ancestor from whom all tribes now resident on the shoves of Lake Rotorua are descended. Among those present were,' Messrs MacCormick and Holland, Native Land Court judges; Mr C. If. Clinkard. Mayor .of Rotorua';. Dr. r. Buck, and! lire Rev. F. H. Spencer. Tam ill an a Tiki tore, the chief who erected/ the meeting house, is a. direct descendant of Uenukukopako, and before the official opening, Welcomed tlio •visitors. Mr Spencer conducted a, short service, wliicli was followed by the removal of the tapu on the building. This was performed pv the iyiaoj'i chief Taua. Mr Jones was then called upon Ip turn the key and: declare tho meeting house open. After tho ceremony everyone partook of a wen-served! dinner in honor of the occasion.
