COOK HOSPITAL.

MONTHLY BOARD MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Cook Hospital Board was held yesterday afternoon, there being present: Mr. W. CL Sherrattj chairman, Mrs. A. Scott, and Messrs. D, W. Coleman, W. W. Shanks, M. T. Trafford, J. C. Benson, C. H. Bridge, H. H. DeCosla, T. B. Spence, J. B. von Pein, W. J. McCliskie, and H. Kenway. The district nurse at Matawai wrote in regard to the jig supplied for her Use, stating that it was in bad condition, and asking permission to send it to town for repair.—lt was decided to leave the matter in Mr. Bridge’s hands for investigation. The Napier Hospital Board forwarded information regarding the government of the Old People’s Home.—lt was decided to hold the letter over pending irfformation in regard to the same matter from other hoards.

The Director-General of Health and the Superintendent of the National Provident Fund wrote iu regard to the nurses’ superannuation fund.—The letters were received.

Writing in regard to the Board’s overdraft, the Director-General of Health stated that the Board’s overdraft limit in anticipation of subsidy had been fixed at £4ooo.—TJie chairman stated that it was not thought that Hie amount would be required, but it would be as well to have the authority in ease of necessity.— It was decided to advise the Department to this effect.

Accounts totalling £3237 9s 3d, as approved by the finance committee, were passed for payment. The treasurer’s statement showed receipts totalling £7382 ss, including levies, £2865. Government subsidy, £3929, and patients’ fees, £359- 2s 6d. The expenditure for the month totalled £5066 17s 2d, leaving a credit balance of £2316 7s lOd. Fees charged during the month amounted to £2327 13s 6d. The medical superintendent's' report showed that 135 patients had been admitted during the month, and 143 discharged, while three, deaths occurred, leaving 100 patients at the end of .the month.

The-custodian of the Memorial t Homo reported that two men and one "woman had been admitted during the month, while two men bad been discharged, leaving 36 men and six women in the institution at tin* end of the month, ineiuding twelve in the infirmary ward. The district nurses’ reports were as followsN'tirso J. Park, district nurse, Matawai, reported having attended and advised 31 eases during the month. Nurse M. J. l’aora, district native nurse, Tolaga Bay, reported having attended and advised 52 eases during the month,, and having visited one Maori pa. Nurse M. J. Cartwright, district native nurse, Te lvaraka, report not yet to hand. -The Board’s engineer, Mr. It. MeNab, reported as follows “Tilt* contractors for the new hot water service, .1. 8. Allan and Hon, have now completed the installation of same i the main wards, etc., Were'changed over to the new service without any inconvenience to the hospital. The hew servjvo is working throughout the hospital with entire satisfaction; the design, workmanship and material are first-class, Which makes the service a highly efficient one. The. election of the ‘heating system is now. completed, the mains have been tested. The dual tests will be made very soon. Improvements have been made in the laundry arid stores by fitting suitable racks and shelves. llcpairs that were necessary have been carried out about the buildings. The water mains have been repaired where leaking. The sanitary and steam service have been repaired and renewals made where required. The coal consumption for the month was: March, 25 tons. 10 cwt.. posting £102; Febfuary. 23 tons 13 ewt. 2 qrs.® costing £94 14s; January, 25 lons 3 ewt. 3 qrs., costing £IOO 155.” The matron of the Tolaga Bay Hospital advised that five cases had been admitted during the month, and six discharged, three babies being horn. Gifts of fruit were made by Mrs. Thornton and Mr. Jolly; ducks. Mrs. Irvine; hooks, |lrs. l’rinee.

The visiting committee reported having inspected the hospital and Memorial Home and found everything satisfactory.
