OBITUARY.

PASTOR H. M. HIES. (Per Press Association.) DANNEVIRKE, this day. The death occurred to-day of Pastor H. M. Ries, aged 66, one of the pioneer settlers in the district. He arrived from Denmark in 1866. He was a ofithe Lutheran Church. He was a former Mayor and was a- member at different times of various local bodies of the district-. MR GEORGE F. FURRY. (Special to ttie Herald.' CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The death is announced of another Canterbury pioneer, Mr George Frederick, Fur by. The late Mr Fuf-by was born in Hastings, England, in 1853, and landed at LvttelEon with his parents from the ship Maori-, in 1858. Tlie family settled in Christchurch, and Mr Furby; was educated at-St. Michael’s Parish School and . Christ's College. In 1870Mr Furby joined the Telegraph Department at Hokitika as a cadet, and served for many years at various places on the ;West Coast! during the gold-mining activities of the late seventies. Amongstother offices, Mr Furby occupied the positions of postmaster at Kumara. Rangiora, Hamilton, and at the time of his retirement in 1915, was Senior Inspector of Post Offices for the South Island. In his younger days, Mr Furby was an enthusiastic Freemason, and besides other offices lie hold the position of Worshipful Master of Lazar Lodge, Kumara. and was secretary of Ashley Lodge, Rangiora. When he was installed as master of the Lazar Lodge in 1879, Mr Furby was one of the youngest masters in the craft. Deceased is survived f)v a widow and, four sons; Mr F. W. Furby. of Wellington. Mr G. V. Furby, of Ashburton, Major W. E. S. Furby, and Engineer-Lieutenant E. H. Furby, R.N.R.j both of Christchurch. CHIEF NCATAI TE MAMAKU. (Per Press Association.i TAUMARUNUI, this day. Tho death has.occurred of the Maori chief Xgatai Te Mamuka, aged 50, a grandson of Chief Tapine Te Mamaku. who at one time was paramount ■chief of tlie Upper Wanganui. Deceased belonged to the Ngati-Haurou tribes. LIEUT. JOHN BROOKING.

The death occurred in Aueklan/t on Friday last of Lieut. John Broooking, husband of Mrs Kathleen Brooking (daughter of the late Mr. R. Leslie Hunt and Mrs Hunt, of Auckland), after a long and painful illness which ho bore with great fortitude and cheerfulness. The late Lieut. Brooking saw three years active service' in the late war, and the illness from which he suffered was the result of the injutics received while on service. Lieut. Brooking was the son of the late Mr. Julian Arthur Brooking and Mrs. Brooking, who were pioneers of the early days, and . who were well known on the East Coast, where Mrs Brooking still resides MR. S. C. CAULTON. One of the earliest' settlors of Poverty Bay, Mr. Stapleton Cotton Caulton,. died at. St. Hcliers Bay, Auckland, yesterday at the age of 86 years. The late Mr. Caulton, who was the father of Messrs. Reg. and Alex. Caulton, who have been well known residents of this district, was one of the proprietors of the Masonic Hotel. Gisborne. Prior to coming to this district ho had conducted an hotel nt Napier and had also taken part in the Maori war in Hawke’s Bay. He was in the (lishnnc district during the troublous times with the Maoris and took part in the siege of Wac-renga-a-hika. Subsequently he took up a farm in the Ormond district and later went to 'the: South African war as a iientenant. losing an arm. He was predeceased spine, years ago by his wife, who was a sister of Mrs Bln*.** and Mrs Clayton. *
