STRUCK BY CYCLONE.
NEW SOUTH WALES TOWN. MAN IT BUILDINGS' DESTROYED. ABOUT 36 HOMELESS PEOPLE. SYDNEY, April 8. A cyclone struck, .the outskirts of Trangi’e, hi the western district of New South. Wales on. Tuesday afternoon. Houses, halls,' churches, trees —all in' the path of the stem —were laid flat. Two persons were seriously injured, and many persons received minor injuries. About 30 people are homeless. In one of the houses destroyed, a mother and three young children narrowly escaped death. Damage is estimated at thousands of pounds; heavy rain which began soon after the storm had passed, ruined furniture and other goods m the destroyed buildings. A quarter of an hour before it struck, the town tho cyclone could be seen over the plains on ihe south-west- A long, spiral column, it appeared lo lie stationary for some time. As it, reached the town, the. roar was deafening. Sheets; of iron and timber were flying in all directions.
Five weatherboard houses, a brick building, the Masonic Temple, the Church of England, and a wool store were razed to the ground.
Mrs Ernest Smith was in bed with a young baby, when the roof was lifted off.her liome. She was carried into the next-door neighbor’s house, which fortunately had only the back portion demolished.
Two persons were seriously hurt; Mrs Arthur Wheatley, who- is suffering from wounds in the bond, and - Mrs Sarah Ayres, aged 70, who is suffering from shock and severe abrasions. Many persons received minor injuries, - A young man named Pervam was leading a- horse along the street when a sheet of iron flew through the-air, cutting.. the horse’s throat, and killing it instantly. Perram escaped uninjured. The wrecked houses present a pitiable sight. , The roof of Mr Carlin’s place fell in when Mrs CnMin and three young children wore in the house. All escaped with'shock. When the cyclone disappeared the vain came down in torrents, and continued for an hour.
