CELEBRATING 85TH BIRTHDAY.
MILLIONAIRE’S GIFT TO CHARITY
NEW YORK, Feb. 22
Mr. John Andrus celebrated his 85th birthday to-day in his suburban homo by allotting 45 per emit, of the value of bis worldly goods, to-day conservatively estimated at about £15,000,000, to the foundation of a homo for poor children and its maintenance. He has given 100 acres of ground for the purpose and invited architects to supply model plans. Tho octogenarian told the reporters today that his gift was inspired by Mrs. Andus. who came to America, as a child from Switzerland, and whose jife was made easier because many strangers befriended her. Mr. Andrus’ chief claim to famo hitherto has been the fact Hint, despite his millions, he has travelled by the twopenny tube from Yonkers, bis suburban homo, to New York, 20 miles away, oil five days of every week. As things are to-day, with all the main streets,, clogged by motor traffic, MrAndrus considers tube travelling not only much cheaper than any other form of transportation, but also much quicker and safer.
