ROWING.

GISBORNE CLUB.

CLUB RACE TO-DAY

The club programme of the Gisborne Rowing,Club will be brought to a conclusion to-daywhen the final race in Chas. Adair four-oar series will be rowed on the Taruhern diver. Tho crews engaged in this event are stroked respectively by E. M. Goffe and G- C. Jones, mid.'each was successful last evening in the semi-final contests;’ winning from wrfb|anciied l ' r pppohents. On' their performances in the heats of the series, the two crews selected as having the best chance'were those stroked by P. T. Fromm and S. Brown. The semi-final results were disconcerting to the most experienced oarsmen and judges, 1 therefore.' for' both these crews went down to defeat, beaten by lighter fours.

When Goffe got away with a characteristically ‘clashing start, 'the spectators at the “barrier” ’ were satisfied that Fromm would quickly pick up the lost distance, but in a furlong anl a half, the lighter crew had established a decisive lead, and swinging along with a smart movement, they kept their boat running nicely throughout the race, healing off tile challenge entered by Fromm in the lust quarter' of a' mile.' • On Iho _ run home, tliu'losers suffered a slight mishap to a rigger, but the contest was already decided, and Goffe’s offer of a re-vow was not availed of. 'Golfe won with a little dear Water. A CLOSE RACE. The secouud race was much closer all tho way, neither four getting a decided advantage until near the finish. The start was fairly even. Brown getting a slight lead'in the first dozen, but losing it. again in the swing-out. At Uallance Street, having covered a furlong and a half, the boats were pn level terms, ami Jones called for weight, setting a slightly faster stroke than bis opponent. '(’lie time of both crews was good, but a stronger catdi, in conjunction with the faster rate of striking,, enabled Julies to pull ahead gradually until he had an ml vantage of' about three-quartets of a length. Afore than this lie eohid not glim, but still hitting up a fast stroke, ho maintained it until near Derby street, where Brown improved materially. The spurt robbed the erew of its finish, however, arid Jones eventually won by just under a length. Tn the matter of weight lho finalists are evenly matched, and to-night’s deciding contest, should prove extremely interesting.
