A statement made at the medical conference. by Sir Lin do Ferguson, of Dunedin, that too many operations were performed at the public hospitals, was discussed at n meeting of the Hospital Board, when a question was asked from the chairman, who at the time was reporting on the hospitals conference, if there were, any grounds for the assertion. It bad also been stated it would perhaps be a good thing for New Zealand if some of the hospital boards went out of existence.

The chairman explained that l)r. JJnwin was responsible- for (he latter statement'. He referred to country hospitals where young surgeons were apt to perform operations with instruments not the last word in .efficiency. Sir Linda .Ferguson’s slatciincnt should not he taken seriously. After a. discussion no motion was passed.
