TAHARAKURI BUSH.

SWEPT BY FIRE.

[' Taharakuri bush, better known as Waikare, neap . Orlanui, is again on fire, reports the Rotonia Chronicle. This is a most unfortunate bush. It gels afire once a year regularly. At one •tinif» it was one of tho bes'i hush areas in the district, but fire has taken yearly toll and millions^ of feet of lovely timber i have gone up irTsmoke. It is alleged that this Inst, fire was* caused by, a careless individual throwing a match away after lighting a cigarette. A timber: ■ man stated that negotiations? had been' proceeding between a, firm of sawmillers and the owners for nearly three years to secura the cutting rights'of what bitsh is left, but owing to an. absurd valuation the rnattpr was hung up. In his opinion the Maori Land Board should take' action And fix a! reasonable price, get the area used, and thus' save its estimated' loss to the natives and the country.
