GOOD PEFORMANCES.

TEST FOR- B GRADE BANDS. JUDGE’S COMMENT’S ON PLAYING. The Festival Hall at the Dunedin Exhibition was well filled on Monday evening, when nine B grade bands wdre in opnosition, Air. F. ,T. Ricketts acting as adjudicator. The test piece, an arrangement of Verdi’s “Rigolelto,” is of average difficulty, but it,served to show the merits and demerits of the various contestants. Generally speaking, the performances were very meritorious fm the B grade, and such faults as were in evidence were those usually associated with amateur bands—faulty intonation, lack of attention to detail (particularly jn respect of time-values), and failure to grasp the spirit of the work, the interpretation suffering in consequence. No points wore announced. Tn a brief comment on.the playing the following reference appears respecting the Gisbornel City Band:—This was also a. highly meritorious performance, the hand showing a better grip of the work, and its Maying throughout being cleaner, than that of some of the other competitors. The solos wore nil wcill handled, and in the concerted sections thorn was a very commendable balance of blend and volume, overblowing being cnnsnicuons bv its absence. Alto, cether, it was a highly creditable reading of the work.
