By an error in the quotation marks it appeared that Ilis Excellency the Governor-General gave hack to the Arawa tribe a mere presented to his father, Sir .lames Fergusson, by Poihipi in 1874. The speech of Poiliipi was: "I give it to you as a .sign that peace may he hot ween us for ever and ever.” These, words were attributed to His Excellency. His Excellency’ values the historic gift too highly to' part, with it and would not return it; save at the spot where if was presented at Taupo. WELLINGTON, this day.
The. following prisoners appeared before Mr. Justice Rood in the Supreme Court this morning: Michael Sinnot , for committing an unnatural offence, pleaded for lenient treatment. His Honor said the case gave him some difficulty, as he was not sure the prisoner was not more sinned against than sinning. hi view'd! the fact Jhafc he had been in gaol for live weeks already, ho sentenced him to imprisonment for one month. Robert Irvine Owens, on six charges of breaking and entering, was sentenced to three years’ reformative detention. Thomas Vincent, Dowdall, for housebreaking and theft, was ordered to he detained l for reformative purposes for two years
In the Supreme Court, the evidence in the easo against William Smith and Sidney Erin 1 Bauinc was concluded. The mother of Bauinc stated that Defective Cameron’s statement in regard to Baume’s admission that lie knew it was wrong to accept the money was absolutely untrue. Counsel then addressed the Court. The jury retired at one o'clock.
