DETERIORATED LANDS.
HON. MR McLEOTVS STATEMENT. W RONt: IMPRESBION C< )NYEYED. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. In reference to a Feilding telegram reporting a statement by the Hon. A. D. McLeod in regard to assistance to settlors on deteriorated land, the Minister stales that, the report, conveyed an entirely wrong impression. “1. stated,” said Air. McLeod, “that the present-day costings rendered, the possibility of bringing back to productive pasture a considerable area of steep and inaccessible lands, situated at a distance from the railway and other means of cheap transport, extremely problematical. I added that 1 was not hopeful of results, for where large areas, by use of the plough, closer subdivision, and liberal top-dressing, could be brought in it. was mot going to be a simple matter, and if was only by the earnest cooperation of the Government, the mortgagees, and the settlers themselves that useful and lasting results could be obtained.”
