CLOSE RELATIONS.
JAPAN AND AUSTRALIA. MR. BRUOE'S MESSAGE. MELBOURNE, Dec. 17.—1 n reply to thd messagp presented to him yesterday by the Japanese Consul-General, Mr Iyemasa Tokugaka, the Prima Minister (Mr. Bruce) has sent the following message to Viscount Ivato, Prime Minister of Japan:— "Tin- messages of friendship and goodwill which, on behalf of the Japanese Government and people, you have so kindly communicated to me through Mr. Tokugawa, is rtrofundlv approeifetl by tho Commonwealth Government,, and is enirdiallv reciprocated by all the people throughout Australia. "The .beginning of our history as a nation was marked by comradeship with tha Japanese people in the cause of Justice and Right in thct years of peace. Since the Great War this cooperation has continued in tho same spirit, of friendship and happy understanding.'
DESTINIES OF TWO PEOPLES.
"The destinies of the two peoples in the Pacific lie togtthev. Our civilisations are complementary, and we shall mutually enrich ourselves in receiving and giving what is best in them. This the Australian people hope to achieve by the closest of relations with your people. "The Australian Government is sure that both the Japanese and Australian peoples are inspired' by the same ideals of peace, and that a spirit of mutual understanding will guide them in the future, as in the past, in the path of friendship and fruitful international cooperation."
