His will reveals tha throughout his life ho had suffered :'rom, tuberculosis, and he returned 1 rom France with his health finally broken.
He declared that he omitted giving legacies to strong, healthy men he used to know, who lived in 'luxury when a crisis came, preferring self before "country. They stayed nt home while others fought their battles. He made various bequests in recognition of "true, loyal friends, -whose devoted services and kindness cheered a sick and lonely man." Included were the. English' cook and the Egyptian head attendant at the Luxor Hospital, and tho hall porter at the Luxor Hotel. He- also left £IOO to the British Legion, and £ooo to the King of Egypt for th? poor of Luxor, who are not professional beggars
