DUMPING FROZEN MEAT.
CONTINENTAL SURPLUSES UNJiOAJDKD ON LONDON. LONDON. Nov. 17.—How England is made the dumping ground for frozen meat which is not wanted on the Continent is shown in a report on' the refrigerated! meat tradfo issued by the Ministry of Agriculture yesterday. The report • states that meat merchants in this country have now to ineludb the Continent in their reckoning, not only as a rival for supplies or as an outlet but as a reservoir from which supplies may be shipped at any moment to the English market. The development of the frozen meat trade on the Continent since the war has been phenomenal and eold storage accommodation has been so extended that reshipmont from. say, Rotterdam or Hamburg can be made when the London market is most favorable. |, The chief importing countries are Italy, France, Germany, Belgium, and Tollandi. Belgium is also importing beef on the hoof from the Argentine, some at least of which will probably appear in London as fresh killed. The report states that there is much cross-selling between importers and job bers, and, particularly when the market is rising, goods inav pa. e s through the hands of several jobbers before reaching (he retail butcher. The year 1924 was a record year for frozen beef imports into (be Continent —the total being 459.000 tons, as against W 000 tons in. 1923 and 20,000 tons in 1913.
