The Waipukiirau Jockey dub bad . a narrow escape from losing its new stewards’ stand during its meeting on Boxing Day. A strong wind was blowing at the time of (lie discovery of a fire in its incipient stages under the seating accommodation. A dropped lighted cigarette end fanned by the wind apparently set the boarding on fire. Fortunately Ibe smoke was noticed by the occupants of the stand, ami the application of a jug or two of water had the outbreak extinguished.
