HEAVY LOSS.
FIRE IN WELLINGTON. BRIGADE’S SPLENDID FIGHT. (Per Press Association.! WELLINGTON, last, night. A fire, attended by heavy loss, occurred near Courtenay Place this evening, when the Wellington Fruit, Exchange building in. Blair street was almost totally destroyed. The heaviest losers . are Thompson Bros, and Co., and Byron, Brown, open warehouse and crockery importers. Several other firms suffered damage by heat, smoke and water.
The lire was discovered at 8 o’clock by the employees of Thompson Bros, and Leary and Co. The top portion of tho building was occupied by Byron Brown and apparently the lire commenced in or near there.
The fire brigade made a splendid fight., and saved tho other buildings, hut tho premises and the stock of the firms named and several others were either destroyed or damaged. It is stated the loss is in . the vicinity of £15,000.
