Tht> lire m the Wellington Fruit Ex change diil considerable damage. H broke out- in a t'lirce-storey building occupied by Thompson Bros., on the top itoor of Byron Brown's crockery store, and it was apparently in this the fire started. It was nut till 10 p.m. that the bridage succeeded in suppressing it. The roof and top storey were burned out, and water deluged the remainder of Urn building. Thompson Bros.’ stock of confectionery, fancy goods, etc., was practically ruined by water and smoke. In'the basement a large stock of groceries suffered severely, and in the Fruit Exchange oranges, potatoes, etc., were damaged. The loss is estimated at £2O,CCO or more. A large quantity of cherries and other fruit from Sydney had just been cleared, or the loss would have been still greater.
