FIRE AT MATATA.
WOODEN BUILDING BLOCK DESTROYED. [Per Press Association.) WJTAKATANE. this day. A lire at .Mat,ala early this morning destroyed the wooden business block in the main street-,' including property and stock valued at about £6500. The losses are: Mrs. Lees’ store and dwelling, insurance £ISOO in the New Zealand office; hotel and storeroom, insurance £BSO in tlic- same office; Mayo’s fancy goods store, insurance unknown; Miss Staiger’s confectionery shop, insured in the Guardian office.
A - bucket brigade did good work and saved the Dot-el building, which was only 15ft. from the burned storeroom. The hole! block was owned by W. .Montgomery, and Mrs. Lees’ store by Burt Bros., of Matala.
