CENTENARY OF THE CANDLE.
I’.VKIG, October 23. —The centenary of fbe candle lias just been celebrated at the Natural History Museum of Urn nee by representatives of the scientific societies of nineteen countries, who assembled to do honor to the memory of Chevron], the great French chemist, who died in 1880 at the age of 103. It was Chevreul who, in conjunction with another eminent chemist, Gay-Lussac, made the first modern candle by employing stearin to harden the fats of which it was composed. The only improvement of any importance which has since been made on Chevreul \s candle is the addition of a wick which is consumed at the same rate as the wax. After a speech by M, Yvon Del bos, (lie newly-appointed Minister of Bulilie Instruction, Dr. Henry Armstrong. F.R.S., ox-president of the Chemical .Society, spoke on behalf of the foreign delegates.
