Dee. 2-5. fbe Muaiciiml Conned is sending a letter to the senior Consul, .saving that notwithstanding 'be fact that a majority of the Judges on the Commission of Inquiry exonerate the police from blame, Mr. MeEwen, Commissioner of I’obe. and Mr. .Everson, Inspector in charge of Longa station, tendered their resignations.
The Council, preferring, as always, to take action likely to promote the settlement of the questions at issue, decided to accept tiie resignations, with an expression of appreciation of the meritorious services that those officers rendered in the past. The Council further desired to tender its expressions of regret, at the. loss of life on May >jo, and as a mark of sympathy with I lie wounded and Ihe relatives of those killed, enclosed a cheque for 70.000 dollars.- which Hie Council asked should be transmit fed to the Chinese Foreign Commissioner for dkdribuilon to those concerned, as a compassionate grant.
