CHRISTMAS SHOPPING.
AUCKLAND FIRMS- WELT. SATISFIED. With Christmas shopping in full swing Auckland business firms display a spirit of optimism they have not known for many months past. The rush on shops has been must- pronounced during the last two or three days, rivalling that- of the best years before the war; in fact, conditions in the Auckland retail trade approximate more eloselv to pre-war prosperity than ever 'before. While money appears to be somewhat scarce, a fact shown Try a. general disinclination to indulge in extravagant spending, business in the last day or two has exceeded that of last year in volumue and appears to he more evenly distributed throughout various brunches of trade. In some ol the large departmental stores the amount of business has been classed hv departmental managers as enormous. “People are buying steadily and sensibly declared the managing director of a leading Queen street firm. “Cur premises are besieged by larger crowds than we usually experience at this time of the season, and purchasers, while avoiding expensive lines, are displaying infinitely better taste where quality is concerned and judgment as regards reasonable price than they have shown 'since 1013.”
