A U.S. RUBBER EMPIRE IN A PEW YEARS. NEAV YORK, Oct. 22.—A new rubber emperor has arisen in the liiitcd States. Hs is Mr. Harvey S. Firestone, who proclaimed yesterday that lie has become president of: a company which is prepared to invest £20,000,000 in Liberia with the object, of overcoming the British and Dutch monopoly in rubber. Mr. Firesthne many months ago declared war against the British rubber restrictions. He is now giving the utmost publicity to his prospective rubber empire in Liberia. Summoning press representatives to his hotel last evening, he outlined his scheme. With 20 planting organisations he wishes the British to know that in a few years’ time he expects to have an output in Liberia of 250,000 tons of rubber yearly, or 50 per cent, of the world’s present output. By arrangement with the Liberian Government he has already chosen a million acres of land, and he contemplates employing 500,000 natives. The now rubber emperor says that ho litis contracted with a New York firm to construct a great breakwater

and harbor at Monrocin. lie is -ending his son this week to represent the new empire in London.
