WHY PRICES SOARED
RUSSIAN PLOT? LONDON, Dec. 13.—The. Daily Mail says that the Food Council, oil December 15. will open its inquiry, which, if the full facts are obtained, should expose ii, trading scandal involving Russia. The inquiry aims at explaining the recent remarknMe increases in wheat pliers which were responsible lor 11 if advances in the price of Hour and bread after they had declined lor two mouths, Ii is believed that the sharp reaction is due to the Soviet - Government issuing ialse figures indicating an abundant wheat crop and deceiving importers possessing onlv scanty, stocks, who otherwise would iii.l Rive posponed buying.
It is understood that the Soviet agents were aware of the deception, and extensively bought wheat Intures at Chicago and Winnipeg, not intending to take delivery, but merely to sell at a substantial profit.
