“ROAD HOGS.”
DETECTION OF.SPEEDING MOTORISTS.
OHRISTCHURCH BURGESSES MOVE
(Special to tho Herald.) CHRISTCHURCH-; this day
It- was decided at-a meeting of tho United Burgesses Association that each affiliated association should be recommended to appoint a vigi-lanco committee for the detection of speeding motorists and other by-law. breakers.
Inspector 'll. Till wrote, in reply to a letter from the. United Burgesses Association that the problem of speeding motorists claimed the constant attention of the police.
Mr. A, E. Loach said the onus of reporting speeders was to a great extent on the ordinary citizen, who should as sist the police as much as possible. Ho knew of ouhjageuus eases of speeding, particularly near a school. Mr. P. Heii-nessy believed the punishment of road hogs was too light. They got off with fines of 10s, when intoxicated drivers were sent to gaol. There was really no difference in. the cases. Tic had seen a, motorist going through Sprbydon .at 45 miles an -hour a few days'ago, and by the time ho finished up in Barrington street be was doing 50, miles an hour. Mr. R. B. Dailey: It’s a pity he didn’t, finish up in hospital. Various magistrates had, said Mr. Dallv, expressed l their intention of sending intoxicated motorists to gaol. Why jia'd they gone back on- that? He had been astonished to find that in the. eyas of some Magistrates it. was more heinous to cycle without a light than for a motorist to drive without a light. The police did not seem to get the support from the Bench that' they should.
