BOWLERS’ RIGHTS.
SHOULD RESIN BE USED? (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.; (Received November 25, 11 a.irj.) LONDON, Nov. 24. The Daily Telegraph, discussing Mailey's advocacy of using resin for raising the seams on a bail in bowling, says: “Wo arc grateful to .Mailev tor expounding his theory regarding a bowler’s rights before the season begins. Our players, captains, umpires, and legislators now know tins claims they must expect. Thei practice of using resin and raising the seams has been condemned by the English cricketers’ first authority, but Mailev is able to show that there is precedent or analogy ior everything he wants to do. Nevertheless no game can bo pleasantly conducted by formal legality. Many things may be* lawful which are inexpedient, and the argument from sawdust to resin, is liable to abuse in a game which is better without the danger of such devices. It is most important that 'before the Australians begin their tour a clear and friendly agreement should be made regarding the howler's right over the ban.” (Sydney Sun Cables.) (Received November 25. 11 a.m.) LONDON, Nov. 24.
It is stated that the Marylebo.no Club discussed the question of seam picking, following a condemnatory Idler from Lord Harris, and decided to instruct captains of county clubs to desist. Douglas declares a mountain is being made <>nt of a, 1110 I; hid. He does not. mind what n how lev does so long as he does not damage the hall. Ihe howler needs a thoroughly <;ean ball. Why should Ik* not use resin or sawdust if it, is helpful? Umpires should decide the fairnos or otherwise of the methods.
Gil'iigan declared he was not altogether in favor of Vasin, but admits tlieVc is a lot to be said on both sides. Mailev always bowled fairly. He was unaware that seam picking occurred-on the Australian tour, and anyway it did not help Mailev in the slightest.
