A DARK HORSE.

i DELYSIAN -GIVES A SURPRISE. i (Special to the Herald.) ■I AUCKLAND, this day. That horses race in all shapes, colors and breeds, and that it is unwise to count any horse out as a possible winnttf; i\vas forcibly brought home to racegoers in the case of Delysian at the Waikato Hunt Club’s meeting yesterday. About four years ago Delysian made Ins appearance at Ellerslie and was treated as a joke by everyone, trainers included. Certainly ihere was that about the appearance of Delysian which suggested the gliding would be more at home in a erfrt, and when lie. was duly produced in a race at Takapuna he created many a laugh as his own paraded him in the birdcage, the while a wo'] known jockey rubbed the horse down with a small handkerchief. However, the horse started and finished the length of the straight behind the field. If ever there looked a hopeless proposition on the racecourse it was Delysian. Rut one can never tell. Yesterday Delysian was produced in the second division, pf the Bardowie Hack Handicap at Te Rapa, and prior to the race more than one racegoer pointed out-how far Dolysian would bo behind, the distance varying from 1.00 yards to a. couple of fur- ; longs. The surprise can be imagined ; when in the last fifty yards of the race Delysian dashed up .on the rails, and finishing faster than any of his'opponents, lie just failed by three-quarters of a length to "reach the winner, Arch Opal. What ..the public thought,of Delysian’s chances was shown by bis few supporters receiving nearly half a I century for second place.
