TARIFF CONFERENCE OPENS. STUDENTS DEMONSTRATE. Elec Tel. Copy right—United Press Assn i .Australian nnd N.Z. Gable Association! PEKIN, Oct. 26. Tuan C'rijui opened the Tariff Conference. Two thousand students demonstrated and demanded admission. Upon refusal they attacked the police with sticks and stones. Thirty police were injured and sent te hospital. Sopie students were also injured and others arrested. Older was restored. Tuan Chijui’s address of welcome to the delegates consisted chiefly of a demand for tariff autonomy. (Received October 28, JO a.m.) PEKIN, October 27. At the tariff conference an outline was given of Chinese proposals. First, the Powers declare, with respect to autonomy, that they agree to remove all existing tariff restrictions; secondly, China agrees to abolish the likin dues and to introduce a national tariff not later than January Ist, 1920; thirdly, previous to the enforcement of a national tariff a surtax shall be levied of live per cent, on ordinary goods, thirty per cent, on wino and tobacco, twenty per cent, on luxuries; fourthly, the collection of the above surtaxes shall begin three months from the da*fo of signature. Mr. Mad cay stated the British delegation was prepared t o discuss tariff autonomy, either at this conference or later. Ho was convinced British and Chinese interests were essentially the same. ■ ■ - .
