IMPRESSIONS OF DOMINION.

ADDRESS BY SIR ERNEST RUTHERFORD. Sir Ernest Rutherford said, in the course of an address at Wellington, that during the present tour of New Zealand he had visited, Auckland, Taranaki, and Waikato. “1 have been much struck,” lie said, “by the great advances which have been made in the clearing of the country since I paid a short visit just before the war. I have noticed great improvements in the farm lands of the provincial districts. I have observed that the improvement is partially due to the clearing and draining, and partly tho use of various fertilisers, which appear to have a marked effect on the returns from the land. When I was hero eleven years ago." continued Sir Ernest, “milking by machine was just coming in, hut I now find that it is universal, and in tho great majority of eases there is also a local separator. The growth of towns like Auckland, New Plymouth, and Hamilton lias been very obvious.

“In travelling through tho country one observes great improvements in main roads, although in a number of places there is still great room for improvement. During my motor journey from Te Kuiti to New Plymouth I was much struck with the fine road that lias been mado from Mokau to New Plymouth. I had an opportunity of visiting the proposed power installation at Arapani and' saw it at a most interesting stage of its development. I have seen some of the big power stations in Canada and the United States, and' it is clear that this station at Arapuni will rank in importance with some of the } biggest, power stations in the world. It is a. sign of the progress of the Dominion that such large works can be undertaken, even before it. is possible to use the fglj supply of power from the station. No doubt this power scheme will ultimately prove of great value to New Zealand, and as .1 have said it is interesting. to see that your Government is so progressive in providing electric power, both for cities and for farming.”
