FARMER IMMIGRANTS.

FURTHER ASSISTANCE SOUGHT. At the recent Dominion conference of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union the follrwing remit was passed : “That in order to encourage immigration to settle the Crown lands of the Dominion, it is desirable that settlers’ fur.niture, household l effects, and farm implements should be admitted duty free and that free railway transport and passenger fares on the Government railways, to their destina (ion, be provided.” The Under-Secre-tary for Immigration, to whom the matter was referred, has replied to the Dominion secretary of the Farmers' Union stating that it is considered that the present “free list” as under is adequate for present requirements. “Passengers’ baggage and effecle, including only wearing apparel and other personal effects that have been worn or are in use by persons arriving in, New Zealand; also implements, instruments and tools of trade, occupation, or employment of such persons, not- exceeding £IOO in value, and household or other effects which have been in use for twelve months prior to embarkation by the persons or families bringing them to New Zealand, and which are not intended for any other person or persons or for sale, not exceeding in value £IOO for each adult, and £SO for each child, the total value for one family not to exceed £3OO. provided that any such goods must he' imported' within two years of the arrival in New Zealand of the persons or families bv whom they have been used'. Bicycles are admitted free if they have been in use for twelve months before embarkation.”
