WAIKOHU COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Waikoliu jOouuty Council was held to-day. Present: M. Doyle (in the chair) L. H. Mae Lean, A. A. Fraser, W. B. Harding, J. Kain, and' H. J. F. Tombleson. The chairman sent an apology for absence.

The organiser, of the Auckland provincial court of the Dunedin Exhibition vvrpte requesting the Council to appoint a small -committee to supply advice and information re the resources of the district.—lt was decided to reply that all information required would be supplied. The manager of the Bank of New Zealand advised that the fixed deposit repeipt for £6OO in the Poptutu loan has been renewed for a further six months. —Received l .

The chairman of the local District Highways Council wrote asking whether this Council desires to have the highways in its district permanently classified, and if so, in which class. After considerable .discussion it was decided! to classify all main highways in th district as third class roads. This has the effect of barring traffic exceeding a, gross weight, of four tons. The Council however, can at its discretion, give written exemption under prescribed conditions. Correspondence re the Motu Valley loan of £2,000 was received from the Advances Office, seating that Lie loan could not be entertained by the Board, but that an Order-in-Council had been issued, allowing payment of interest at the rate of 6 per cent, per annum.—Received.

The secretary of the Cook Hospital Board,’ advised) that Mr 0. V. Russell had resigned his seat on the Board and requested tho Council’ to nominate another person to fill the vacancy.—lt Was decided to make no appointment until the next meeting of the Council. A circular was received Irom the Tuapeka County Council re the increased railway charges on road metal under the new regulations. The secretary of the New Zealand Counties’ Association forwarded a memorandum on the same sutojeet,—lt was resolved to write to the total members pf Parliament requesting them to do their best to have the railway charges kept, as low as possible. The secretary .of the Counties’ Association, forwarded a copy of a letter from the Minister of Internal Affairs, stating that legislation might ibe brought, down to amend the Counties Act by repealing Sub-section 3 of Sectiop 131, by ayhiah it is required that separate acepounts be kept for each riding. Received.

Mr W. E. Roberts, surfaceman, wrote drawing attention to the state of the fence between the Council’s section at, Utoko and Mr W. H. Beet’s property.— The matter was left to the overseer and the member for the riding. Mr .A. L. Fraser, assistant overseer, intimated that he. had received an appointment on tho Franklin County Council staff ,and desired to resign his ppsition. He asked to ’be relieved of lijs duties on or about August 14. bn the motion of Cr. Kain, it was decided to accept the resignation with regret as from August 31 and to grant Mr Fraser leave of absence from August 14.

The Council went into committee to dpal with estimates in connection with road grants.

The chairman, Cr. Doyle, read a summary of tile resolutions, adopted at the recent highways conference held in Wellington, during which many matters of interest were fully discussed. The overseer’s report was read and adopted. The overseer estimated that the cpst of reinstating the roads after the recent floods would be in the vicinity of. £1250. It was resolved to apply to the Public Works Department for a £ lhr £ gi'ant for flood damage. The oyerseer ytg,s instructed to prepare plans and estimates for the continuation of the metalling and widening on the Motu valley road.
