DREDGING OPERATIONS.
KORUA DIGGING- HERSELF OUT
EARLY START ON DIVERStON
THo rebiwuptioii of dredging operations lias been watched with a considerable amount of interest, n.iid there is, naturally, a fair amount of speculation as to Whether or not the new gearing will prove satisfactory. It is stated that those in charge of the Korun, are well pleased with the new parts, and are conlident of the ability of the vessel to stand the strain which will be placed upon it when work in the diversion cut is recommenced 1 .
At the present time the Korua is employed on the task of digging herself out of the mud in the river. The ltoods which occurred during the time the vessel was laid up lodged 1 a great deal of silt in some portions of the channel, and a certain amount of dredging will ho necessary before the entrance to the cut call oven be reached. It is anticipated, [however, that this will only occupy a few days, and before the end of the week it is hoped to lie in the diversion. Preliminary work in anticipation of this is now being carried out, blasting being done in the vicinity of the old slipway, and the old concrete walls being removed. With the present condition of the channel it will not be possible for the dredge to work the same long hours as formerly, nor will the same output be obtainable. Owing to the restricted depth of the .channel dredging will not he possible within two Tiours of low tide, but it is proposed from, next week, to work two shifts of eight hours each, and to expedite the work to the greatest possible 1 extent.
