The German High Tariff Bill had a stormy passage in the Reichstag, the Socialists organising a continuous pandemonium.
The Chancellor explained that a high tariff was vital to the preservation of Germany’s industry. High tariffs must be fought by high tariffs. Heavy duties would be valuable, for the purposes of negotiating trade agr-eements with other nations, 'but lie only succeeded in his explanation by using his hands like a megaphone because the Socialists mustered before the tribune, hurling insults. The Deputy Speaker ordered one after another to quit the Chamber, and they refused till ejected by the Prussian police. There was great violence when four were named simultaneously. Seventeen police entered. Tho, entire party satirically goose-sCtepped from the Chamber.
