SEA MOCKS NOW AS IN TIME OF CANUTE
LONDON, April 20.—For many years the gravest anxiety has existed oil many parts of the east coast of Eingland owing to the increasing erosion of coast tine. The matter formed the subject of inquiry by a Royal Commission whose findings, however, up to the present time, do not seem to have much more effect upon the advancement of the waves than had the famous command onto given by King Canute.
Tlie same trouble, it seems, is now appearing upon the west coast. Westward Ho, the quaint little seaside resort in North Devon, is threatened with extinction. Recent sea encroachments have been so serious that a scheme lias been hurriedly drawn up for the protection of the place. It must be carried out if Westward Ho is to survive, but its cost, which is estimated at £38,000, is more than the town, wit'll its population of about 5000, can provide itself. An appeal has, therefore, been made to the Ministry of Health. As a loan of £38,000 would more than exhaust the local council’s borrowing powers, the Ministry suggests the formation of a scheme of contributions from all persons interested in the safety and development of Westward Ho.
