QUARTERLY RETURNS,

The quarterly returns of the Supreme Court work in the Gisborne district for the quarter ended June 30 last, show a decline in some directions, and an increase ifv .comparatively few, when compared witV the corresponding period ol last. year. The criminal work of the session was on a par with the usual, three, prisoners coming up for sentence, and three for trial, a conviction being lccorded in one ease only. Five divorce petitions were dealt with, compared with four in the same quarter of 1924. Probate was granted in ten estates, comparer! with nine hist year, while 91 securities wore registered and 15 satisfactions, the respective corresponding figures being’ 82 and 14. The number of bankruptcies showed a substantial decline, only five petitions being filed 1 , while the number for the same quarter of 1924 was 13. Seven discharges were granted, compared with three last year. Only two sales by mortgagees were authorised, this beitig six less than in the June quarter of 1924. The most substantial decline, however, was in the civil business, the claims heard during the last session only totalling £5248 15s 2d. of which amount £3CB4 6s 2d was recovered. For the corresponding quarter of last year the amount claimed was £10,838 10s 6d, and tho amount recovered £7358 10s Bd. The fees collected by the Court during the last session amounted 1 to £356 12s, compared with £275 8s 9d in the 1924 quarter.
