A Kaikoura message states that an earthquake last evening shook down chimneys at several residences, while near Clarence Bridge trees have been uprooted, and cracks formedin the load from two to eight inches wide. The slips causod a blockage of traffic on the Puhi Puhi road. Telephone communication with Christchurch, was-■-interrupted at Kekerangu, halfway between Kaikoura and Blenheim. .. . ~ ■ Tremors have been oxpencncod all day, forty-seven being, .recorded up till a very laic hour to-night, and the residents are camping out in the open At Woodbank station the family of tha owner are bivouacked in the drive, persistent tremors having forced them to the conclusion that that is a safer spot than the house.

(Per Press Association.’ BLENHEIM, this day. Round about Kaikonr.a and in. the vicinity of tlie Clarence river bridge the residents had an uneasy night on Thursday during a series of eart hquake shocks, ■which were more severe there than ill Blenheim district. It is said that fortythree shocks were counted oil Thursday night. The worst was at 11.30 p.m. Shakes were felt, at intervals also throughout yesterday, and two shocks last night. Reports from Clarence state that chimneys are down in all directions. The opinion of residents is that the disturbance centred in the ocean off.the coast, a mile south of Clarence. A crack opened along the coast road, and the land on tho seaward side of the crack appears to have subsided. Telephones around Clarence bridge are out of order.
