SOLDIER SETTLERS' RATES.
(To the Editor of the Heiaiii.) Hir, —1 noticed in your paper of the 18th April that the lawn County Council contradicted statements made to the Minister of Bands, and they also stated that they proved conclusively that there is no soldier in Uawa County paying lCs 2d per acre rates. 1 will leave the judging to your numerous readers. Now, sir, f made that statement to the Minister of Lands on liis recent- visit to the Wharekaka Settlement, where the Count v Council were conspicuous by their absence. 1 had no records with me and made a rough mental calculation of the total demanded by tho County Council from me. The following is a cypv of my last- demand for rates : No. IS Wharekaka Settlement area, 37 acres 1 rood 23 perches; rate struck 3^4; demanded £l6 17s 3d; harbor 13s 6d; 10 per cent, added £1 13s 6rl.— I am, etc., J. ONION. Wharekaka Soldiers Settlement," ’lolaga Bay.
