COAL INQUIRY.
THE WAIKATO MINES. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. The. Coal Inquiry Board met at Auckland this morning. The Hon. Mr. Alison, representing the Taupiri Coal Company, said the company employed about 270 men. The output, which was about 2500 tons a Week, could He increased if a market was available for steam coal, of which there was about. 40 per cent. The Government, took for it long time about twenty thousand tons yearly till .3922. Next year there was a falling off to the extent of tons. .It was stated that this was due to the miners not keeping up the output, the Government being compelled to import large quantities of coal. He was aware that the fireboxes had been altered to suit imported coal. The capital iii the four Waikato collcries totalled £461,000. Tho employees and dependants numbered three thousand. The coal won totalled 500,000 tons, and four companies were prepared to contract for delivery to tho Government of 53,000 tons of screened steam coal annually.
Tho chairman said that what he had seen of the so-called steam coal here seemed good for kitchen purposes.
