DEFENCELESS NEW YORK.

NEW YORK, Jan. 15.—The startling statement that any enemy battle fleet with a proper air squadron could “walk right into New York” was made, by General Mason Patrick, chief of the United States Army Air Service, before the House of Representatives Appropriations Sub-Committee. General Patrick’s statement has created some amazement. “Any hostile fleet that approaches our shores is bound to have aircraft with it,” declared the general. “All the batteries you can place on Ear Rockaway and other Long. Island points, if we had no defending air force, could bo rapidly put out of' commission, and! the fleet could! sail right into New York.” General Patrick strongly urged a ten years’ building programme, with 25,000,000 doll are annually, to put the United States Air Forces up to proper strength.
