EXILE DE LUXE.

NEW YORK, Jan. 5.-The most remarkable incident in American State Government concluded yesterday, when twenty-one Republican Senators of Rhode Island return to Providence after six months’ exile in Massachusetts, to which they fled in, professed fear of assassination at the hands of their Democratic colleagues. For months prior to the Senators’ flight the Democrats had conducted a campaign, and held up all legislation lo force the Republic majority to | approve a Bill authorising a rearrange : ment of the constituencies bv which the Democrats would benefit. The Be pubI licans were obdurate, however, and the j climax was reached last June, when a ' gas bomb was thrown into the Senate I Chamber, with almost fatal results. The. Republicans declared I hat Ihe act ion was an attempt- against their lives, and lied i the State to an isolated country inn. where they have been maintained in 1 luxury ever since. According lo the i f .Til.es, thy had a glorious time, living iti j comfortable, idleness while the governI merit of the State of Rhode Island came to a standstill. Meanwhile, tho general injection had. given the Republicans an I overwhelming majority, and yesterday the exiles returned in triumph to the ' fltntp capital, all expressing sorrow that j their long, delightful holiday was over.
