PORT OF WELLINGTON.
OVERSEAS FREIGHTS. CONCESSIONS TO 1 TRADERS. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The extent to which Wellington and its shippers and importers arc penalised under the system of fiat rate oversea freights is emphasised in a report presented to the Harbor Board by a committee consisting of the chairman (Mr G. Mitchell) and Mr. J. G. Harkness. It is pointed out. that in the adjustment of these freights no allowance is mado for the fact that Wellington is the cheapest port in New Zealand. On the contrary shipper? at this port are taxed by tho high flat, rate of freights both on imports and exports, to makeup for the loss on Home ships travelling round our coast, and picking up a few tons at each port. The committee urge that the Board should take every possible step to bring about a change from tho fiat rate system. Tho Harbor Board adopted the report and authorised reductions of an estimated total amount of £20,C00 per annum in wharfage and other charges. According to the chairman approximately four-fifths of these reductions represent. concessions to exporters and importers.
