SWIMMING.

TOURS OF CHAMPIONS.. (L’er Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, last night. At to-day’s conference of delegates representing the New Zealand Swimming Centre a remit brought forward by the Wellington Centre, suggesting that- the New Zealand championships should be divided, and that the junior and intermediate championships should Ire held in one centre, and the senior championships m another, was lost. In allotting dales for the 1926 championships, the Manuwatu, Hawke’s Bay, and Dunedin delegates put forward claims. Mr H. Henderson, for Otago, urged Otago’s claims on account of the Dunedin Exhibition. He said they acknowledged the fact that they were not entitled to the meeting, but lie kenw that if a vote were taken among the swimmers and not amongst delegates it would be carried by 90 per cent, in favor of Dunedin. The Hawke’s Bay delegate said that to give Dunedin the meeting would be to establish, a. bad -precedent. On. a show of hands the Hawke’s Bay Centre was allotted the 1926 championships. The remit of the Canterbury Centre that a- long plunge be added to the list of New Zealand championships was opposed by a- large number of delegates on the grounds that it was not a feat of endurance in the right direction. It was distinctly injurious to health, and medical evidence was overwhelmingly against it. The remit was turned down. The Auckland delegates moved that the time is now duo when pressure should be brought on the Government to appoint, swimming instructors for each island. This was carried. With respect io the “Learn to -Swim Week,” proposed by the 'Wellington Centre, if was resolved that the. conference appro,vo of the idea. It was resolved that the Association should discourage swimming of long distances by children when qualifying for swimming certificates. It was moved on behalf of the New Zealand Council “that consideration lie given to the ■question of .securing a visit to the Dominion by an overseas swimmer next season.” lb was said the conference should make an immediate move by picking out three or four overseas swimmers in order of preference. A definite plan should be drawn up straight away. The tours undertaken in co-operation with Australia had not yet been successful. Mr Atkins suggested that the council should invite Arne Borg, J. Weismuller, and Miss Almelius in that order. Air Boggs thought. Miss Wehselau should be asked. Mr Ooira, on behalf of the Wellington Centre, suggested that it would he better to get Australian swimmers first of all. He thought E. Eve and M. Christie should be invited. It was decided to invite the Australians first-, and that, failing them, to ask Borg and one of the American champions in that- order, the tour to he undertaken in February next. Air Ooira outlined a scheme by which New Zealand champion swimmers could ■make tours in both islands, swimming ■especially at carnivals in the smaller towns. By those tours he estimated £2OO would lie raised in the Dominion, quid the council could allocate that to the Olympic Games fund. The conference accepted the suggestion and decided to act upon it as soon as possible. ‘ In connection with the New Zealand championship swimming carnival, the Novdon Clip was competed for to-night by Wellington and Canterbury. The trophy was taken by Canterbury, who won Hie three events—Jiving - squadron race, water polo, and diving. The 66 2-3 yards invitation scratch race resulted : da ridge (Wellington) 1, Dowsett, (Wanganui) 2. Emvriglit (Auckland) 3.
