WANGANUI, Saturday.—The Wanganui tire brigade demonstrated its efficiency last evening when its promptness saved a conflagration and perhaps loss of life. The outbreak occurred at Martin and. A passer-by immediately gave the alarm and the brigade was on the scene in a few seconds. Assistance was rendered to Mr Martin, who was severely burned about the hands and arms. The rafters in the root were already ablaze, hut a hose was quickly run out and the tire was suppressed. Attention was directed to the child’s predicament, and despite his burns Mr Martin dashed upstairs and rescued the girl, no easy tatsk in the dense smoke and llnmes. The driver had a rude awakening. Clad in his pyjamas he effected an exit through a window. His hair and eyebrows were singed, but otherwise lie wa.-, little the worse for his experience.
