ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES.
VALUELESS CHEQUE ISSUED YOUNG MAN BEFORE THE COURT. A young man, A. J. 'O’Brien, alias A. G. Morgan, alias Alfred Joseph Vance Ryan, alias Murphy, alias O’Leary, appeared before Messrs I. Mirfield and E. Harper, J’s.P., at the Magistrate’s Court this morning, on a charge of obtaining six bottles of champagne and £5 10s in monev from William Bennett, licensee of the Ormond Hotel, by means of a valueless cheque. Tl appears that on January 30 last O’Bricii obtained the liquor amd the money, and gave a cheque in exchange. Yesterday Mr. Bennett- endeavored to rash the cheque, but found it valueless, and subsequently informed the polioe. A smart arrest was made hv Detective McLeod and Cousin bio Thompson, who found O’Brien at Muriwai ou a return journey from Wairoa. In appearing on behalf of the police at (lie Court this morning. Detective McLeod asked that a reused he remanded until the 25th inst. He. explained that at least four other charges, as well as one at Hamilton, against the accused, would reqwire investigation.
