BOOKMAKER FINED £250. (Per Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, last night, . As a sequel to a police raid several, days ago, William Sawyers appeared at the Magistrate’s Court to-day charged with using his house as a common gaming house, and also with carrying on the business of a bookmaker. Accused pleaded guilty. Detective Carroll said that since his previous conviction fifteen .months ago accused apparently had done nothing else. On the day of the raid, Dunedin Cup day, betting papers were seized of 404 transactions, including 61 doubles, the entered receipts being £539 10s. Another detective took the ’plione and recorded a further £SO. The detective asked for a maximum fine, as there were others behind accused. For the accused, Mr. Russell stated that, the police seemed to be making* a scapegoat of him as it was common knowledge that others were engaged. Ho was willing to give up book making for good. Tho Magistrate. Mr. Gnuckshank, said those backing accused would escape if ho were given imprisonment, while afine would reach' them. He imposed a fine of £250.
