An unprecedented incident occurred at the Cardiff assizes, where a man previously discharged at (he petty sessions on a' charge of maliciously setting fire to a house was presented on a similar charge. Judge McKinnon overruled counsel’s objection that the charge could not lie preferred and ordered the hearing to proceed, because the grand jury had found a true bill, but no one was present to prosecute. The judge said he would have to examine witnesses, and suggested that some member of the bar take the depositions for the purpose of assisting him, hut no one responded. The judge then began the task himself, but. later, the Bar agreed to assist him and the hearing proceeded.
